First grade is a very busy year! We are learning many new things as well as growing. We help the children be responsible, kind and gentle and respectful to everyone.
Each day the children participate in a math morning meeting which starts our day. We learn and practice new skills weekly. Our math program is Saxon which is very comprehensive.
Language arts includes spelling, phonics, grammar, and reading. We use whole group instruction as well as small groups. Reading is differentiated – we use the Daily 5 program.
The teachings of the Catholic church are taught daily.
Social studies and science are taught daily, too.
|About Mrs. Forsythe|
I have been involved at St. Mary School for the past 17 years as both parent and teacher. My children, Ben and Katie, are graduates of St. Mary. Ben is 22 years old and Katie is soon to be 19. I began teaching at St. Mary in 1999 as a long term substitute for third grade which led me to first grade the next year. I am married and live in Hagerstown. We are members of St. Mary parish. I graduated from Hood College with a degree in Special education. My teaching experience includes positions at Potomac Center and Marshall Street School for a combined 15 years. My hobbies include reading, going to the beach, and wathching my children play sports. It is a true blessing for me to be here with your children. They teach me many things as well!Mrs. Forsythe
