Welcome to Second GradeMrs. Bonnie Poffenberger
Welcome to Second Grade!
Students must complete 3 activities of their choice each week. Please write the number of the completed activity on your paper and provide a parent’s signature. If the activity is completed online, it may be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. If the activity is completed on paper, it may be sent in to school in their yellow folder by Friday. Some activities, such as making flash cards, do not have to come to school. We will know your child has completed this activity, under your supervision, when you sign the paper. Click HERE for a list of spelling activities that students can complete to help them practice their weekly words.
There will be a Math assignment almost every night except weekends. Additionally, students should review vocabulary words, complete their reading assignments and weekly spelling activities and when needed, study for tests.

The children will be given a reading assignment for each month. We will be focusing on a different genre of literature (fiction, fantasy, non-fiction, etc.) for each report. The students will be required to choose and read at least one book of that genre for the month and complete an individual project at home to share with the class on the last school day of the month.
We could use the following items for the classroom:
treasure box prizes
2019 – 2020
Each day the students are given a word of the day. As part of their nightly homework, they are to look up the word and know what it means. As part of our morning activities, the children will enter the word in their dictionary and use it in a written sentence.
About Mrs. Bonnie Poffenberger I am beginning my 34nd year of teaching at St. Mary Catholic School. I am always excited to work with a new group of students each year. Their smiling faces and enthusiasm for learning makes me feel energized. I have taught many years in second grade. I have also taught third, fifth, and sixth grades as well as 3 and 4 year olds. I have three children, one grandson and a granddaughter. My oldest daughter graduated from Virginia Tech and is pursuing a medical career in Virginia. My son has a son and daughter. And my youngest daughter graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh with an education degree and teaches in WCPS. I live in Pennsylvania with my husband and my dog, Emma. I enjoy being part of the St. Mary school community. I have not only worked here, but I have also been a parent here. All three of my children graduated from St. Mary’s. They all have fond memories of their time at our school and gained a strong educational background to help them be successful in high school and beyond.
